I had a wonderful experience with Besco Warer Treatment. I'm a seasonal resident and didn't know there were steps to take before closing up after the summer. As a result, I had horribly hard water on my return visit, my silver hair was stained yellow,... and some of my water lines were clogged with sediment. Mike, one of their technicians, went above and beyond to help me! He advised me on how to try and salvage my softener (that's not even their brand), and Besco tested my water every five or six days to see if the hardness was changing. They could have sold me an iron filter (what I thought I needed), or told me my resin tank was shot, but they didn't. All told, it cost me $88 to get back up and running. I wasn't exactly a cash cow customer! I highly recommend this ethical company.read more

The salt you choose for your water softener is an important decision that impacts your softener's performance and longevity. Selecting a lower-quality salt could cause costly problems and negatively impact your water quality. Remember: Cheaper is not necessarily better regarding water softener salt.
How much salt should I add? We recommend keeping your brine tank at least one-quarter full of salt at all times and no more than 4-6 inches from the top in order to maintain optimal performance. Also, make sure that the salt level always remains a few inches above the water level.
Genesis water softener systems are an eco-friendly choice, saving as much as 75% on salt and 65% on water usage with each regeneration in contrast to other softeners. Using upflow softener technology results in the best salt efficiency and the capability to use the lowest reasonable amount of salt.
While the average family will go through a 40 lb bag about once a month or so, your amount will vary. Another factor to consider is how often your water softener regenerates; if it's nightly, then the average family may go through a 40lb bag every 10 to 14 days.
The pellets are definitely superior when it comes to salt pellets vs.salt crystals. Although they're pricier than their crystal counterparts, they can be used as-is without further processing. On the other hand, salt crystals need to be ground down into a fine powder before adding to your softener.
K-Life Water Softener crystals are the healthier alternative to salt regenerants…it adds potassium to drinking water, and is better for the environment! K-Life is potassium chloride, which is a naturally occurring mineral and has been used for years as a salt alternative.
Morton® Clean and Protect™ is America's #1 trusted water softener salt, that helps prevent buildup, and is good for long-term use. Morton® Clean and Protect™ Plus Rust Defense™ helps prevent rust accumulation, while helping remove iron buildup and hard water stains.
In short, yes.Different types of salt have different purposes and effects. For example, solar salt is typically used in water heaters, while evaporated salt is often used in water softeners. Each type of salt has its own unique properties, so it's important to choose the right one for your needs.
Should your softener have water in the brine tank? Yes, it should, as long as it's a post-fill system. But as stated above, unless the salt is almost empty you should not be able to see any of it, because the tank is not supposed to fill up to the top (usually no higher than 10″ to 12″).
If your water softener runs out of salt, then the softening resin will become saturated to the point that no ion exchange can take place. Thus, the calcium and magnesium minerals will remain in your water. Sometimes, the water softener tank may even overflow.
Adding too much salt to your water quality softener can cause salt “bridging,” or a buildup and solidification of regenerant. This buildup can prevent your system from regenerating properly.
In general, we recommend adding a bag of salt every month. At the first of each month check your brine tank and you'll be able to monitor your salt usage and adjust as needed.
Just because you add another electricity-using appliance to the home doesn't mean it's going to be an energy drain. In fact, a water softener doesn't use as much energy as you might expect.
The latest systems also have low salt indicators or even a remote monitoring alert to let you know you are running low on salt and help make water softener maintenance easy. Overall, because newer models are more efficient with salt use, they typically only need to have salt added every 6-8 weeks.
this is perfectly normal, and your water softener is working as it should. One salt block can go down more quickly because of where the brine valve is located in the water softener.
Salt should never escape from your water softener. But when it does, you will start to notice the salty aftertaste pretty quickly. This often happens because the softener accidentally leaks salty water into a home's plumbing during regeneration.
pellets, cubes, solar crystals, blocks, etc. In general, all types of loose water softening salt work well together and there is no particular harm caused by mixing different types.
Water softener salt crystals, pellets, and cubes can be used interchangeably in most water softeners. Be sure to consult your water softener owner's manual to determine if a certain type of salt is recommended for your system.
Its 99% purity prevents debris from contaminating the water softener's brine tank. The larger salt crystals also dissolve more slowly than sidewalk salt. Additionally, the refining process makes water softener salt more expensive than sidewalk salt.
Water softeners today work off gallons going through the system. A house with one person with a 30,000-grain unit will go through a 50Lb bag of salt every five to six weeks. A house with four people if softener is sized correctly a 45,000 or 60,000 grain unit a little more than a 50Lb. bag a month.
For homes without basem*nts or crawl spaces, a garage is another great option for water softener installation. Typically, a garage provides plenty of space and storing softener salt is more convenient than hauling it in the basem*nt.
Vinegar is one of the most effective solutions for removing salt deposits from stainless steel. Mix vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spritz it on the affected area. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing it with a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse off with warm water and repeat if necessary.
Mix a half-cup of distilled white vinegar and half-cup of distilled water and pour it into the iron. Inspect the steam vents for white residue or other buildup and use a toothpick or toothbrush dipped in vinegar to clean them out. Plug in the iron, set it for steam, and wait for about five minutes.
Use “iron out” salt. By using “iron out” salt in your water softener, you can improve your unit's ability to remove iron from your home's water. This salt will not remove enough iron to ensure your water's iron levels are at a safe level, but it will definitely help prevent your unit from rusting out.
Offered exclusively to dealers, our premium-purity water softener salt contains up to 99.8% pure salt. Virtually 100% water soluble, it is uniquely compacted for hardness to prevent mushing and bridging in the brine tank. This helps to keep your softener clean and trouble-free.
People often think that softened water will taste of salt, because it's added to the softener machine. In fact, that salt doesn't go into the water supply. It's used to regenerate the resin beads in the ion exchange process that softens the water. There is more salt in a slice of ham than in a gallon of softened water.
How Long Does Water Softener Salt Last? The resin beads in water softeners get their sodium ions from salt that you must add to the brine tank portion of your softener. This is usually in a tank that is completely separate from the one containing the beads. You'll need to refill the salt once every two to three months.
A basic rule of thumb is that the hardness level of water should not exceed 120 to 170 mg/L, which equates to around 7-10 grains per gallon of water. Whether you get a lab test or do it yourself at home, the hardness level can be determined by an accurate water analysis report.
No brine tank should ever be FULL of water! Newer water softeners, especially those with digital valves, only have water in the brine tank two hours before the softener goes through a cycle. These “dry” tanks should not have water in them between cycles.
Pour about 2 gallons of hot tap water over the remaining salt mass and about a quart into the brine well (the smaller cylinder inside the salt tank) after removing its cap. Turn the water to your softener back on. Let it sit for about 4 hours.
Water softener regeneration cycle time is about two hours. It is not recommended to use water during a water softener regeneration, as hard water will fill the water heater, which could lead to buildup in the equipment.
Both Softener salt and road salt are made of sodium and chloride. On average, water softener salt is 99% pure, and on the other hand, road salt is 95% pure. This is because softener salt does not have any impurities, but road salt has 5% of impurities that include minerals and clay.
* For peak performance in your high-efficiency Rheem water softener, evaporated salt pellets or solar salt crystals with less than 1% impurities are recommended. We do not recommend using any kind of block salt in the Rheem water softeners.
Ice melt salt is generally not recommended for water softeners. Ice melt salt has smaller crystals which can lead to mushing and makes it less suitable for water softeners. It's also less pure than water softener salt and would require more frequent clean out of the salt tank.
In both potassium chloride and sodium chloride water softener systems ion exchange occurs, and the minerals remove magnesium and calcium by swapping places. The only difference is that you'll be drinking potassium with a potassium chloride softener, and you'll be drinking sodium with a sodium chloride softener.
You may be wondering if water softener salt will damage your asphalt or concrete driveway. The short answer is that it can, but the good news is that the damage is usually minimal and can be easily repaired.
In general, all types of loose water softening salt work well together and there is no particular harm caused by mixing different types. However, there may be instances where some types of salt will be preferable to others depending on the specific softener design.
Your water level should always be slightly lower than your salt level in your water softener brine tank. That's because the water needs to touch the salt so that it can absorb it and create the correct concentration of brine.
Since soft water contains a slightly higher amount of sodium, it can elevate your blood pressure. Because of this, softened water is not an ideal choice for somebody with high blood pressure.
Potassium chloride salt is 99.9% sodium-free and, as such, is a great alternative to sodium salt. Therefore, people on sodium-restricted diets can still enjoy the benefits of ingesting soft water.
Sodium chloride (salt) and potassium chloride water softening salts are both effective in softening your water. The two products can also be used interchangeably or be mixed in together.
